A pilot was severely injured after crashing a single-engine aircraft along a Hickory Regional Airport runway on Tuesday night.

The pilot was the only person aboard the Cessna 172, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The pilot鈥檚 identity has not been released.

Hickory Fire Education Coordinator Terri Byers said the pilot was transported from the scene in a medical helicopter. The pilot鈥檚 condition as of 3:30 p.m. Wednesday was unknown.

The plane was landing and veered off the runway around 8 p.m., the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The plane had visible damage to the left wing and nose.聽

The plane is registered to Saltair Flight Training & Aircraft Rentals, according to the Federal Aviation Administration鈥檚 website. Saltair did not immediately respond to requests for comments.

The Federal Aviation Administration鈥檚 preliminary report was not available as of 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Byers said the scene had been cleared as of 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
