The mother of a newborn baby was charged Thursday after social services and hospital employees made a report of child abuse.
Deanna Leigh Floria, 25, of Connelly Springs, was charged with misdemeanor child abuse Thursday, according to a news release from the Â鶹´«Ã½ Department of Public Safety.
Investigators received a report of child abuse on July 22 from the Burke County Department of Social Services and UNC Health Blue Ridge-Morganton, the release said.
Public Safety Capt. Josiah Brown said the newborn, who was still in the hospital after being born, had bruises on their face from being squeezed. Investigators determined the baby had been physically abused and charged Floria, the mother of the child, the public safety release said.
Floria was taken to the magistrate’s office where her bond was set at $1,000 secured, according to public safety.
