Eighth-grader Sam Elliott won the Burke County Public Schools spelling bee for the second year in a row.
Elliott, a student at East Burke Middle School, won the competition by correctly spelling, “gelatinous.†He out-spelled 18 other students from elementary and middle schools in the county to keep the Lillian Butler Trophy at his school.
Liberty Middle School’s Annabel McCauley was the runner up. Other school level winners and district participants were:
