Local governments and schools will be closed for the Christmas and New Year’s holiday.
Federal and post offices
Non-essential federal offices will be closed on Christmas Day, Wednesday, Dec. 25, and New Year’s Day, Wednesday, Jan. 1, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s website.
On Christmas Eve, mail will be delivered, and it will be picked up at the blue collection boxes at the scheduled collection times.
All Post Office locations will be closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Regular Post Office hours and mail delivery will resume on the Thursday after each holiday, according to USPS.
On Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, regular mail will not be delivered or collected but Priority Mail Express will be delivered, according to USPS.

Burke County Public Schools
Cheryl Shuffler, public information officer for the school system, said Dec. 20 is a half-day for students and the start to the holiday break.
Students will return to classes on Jan. 6, with the winter semester ending Jan. 17. Staff will have two workdays, Jan. 21-22.
Burke Middle College is on Western Piedmont Community College’s schedule, with the winter semester ending on Dec. 16. Classes for the spring semester start Jan. 9 and run through May 12.

Burke County government offices will be closed Dec. 24-26 for Christmas and will be closed New Year’s Day.
The landfill and convenience sites will be closed Tuesday, Dec. 24, and Christmas Day, Wednesday, Dec. 25.

City offices will be closed Dec. 24-26 and for New Year’s Day.
Trash pickup during the Christmas week will be:
Normal Monday and Tuesday pickup routes will be collected on Monday. Normal Wednesday and Thursday collections will be collected on a one-day delay.

Town offices will be closed Dec. 24-26 and for New Year’s Day.
Trash will be collected during the week of Christmas on a normal schedule. For recycling, those who normally have their recycling picked up on Wednesdays, that will be collected on Thursday.
