A burning trash fire got out of control near Interstate 40 in Burke County, burning about 2 acres of land on Sunday. A man was cited for the fire.
At about 4 p.m. on Sunday, a trash fire at a home on Jacumin Road, south of the interstate near Valdese, got out of control and spread to some brush, said Robert Bishop, interim chief fire marshal for Burke County.
The fire spread up a bank next to the eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 near the Jacumin Road bridge. Videos from the area show smoke plumes billowing over the interstate, but Bishop said the fire never crossed Interstate 40 and only burned up to the shoulder.
He said while the fire came close, no structures were burned.
The man burning the trash was cited for an illegal burn, Bishop said. Burning anything but natural vegetation is illegal, Bishop said. The fine for illegal burning is $100, according to the Burke County fee schedule.
