Jennifer Pruitt said she was talking with her husband when they saw something flash outside the window of their home in the Cape Hickory Road area near Rhodhiss.
“My husband and I were so into the conversation with each other we barely noticed the light flash through the window,†Pruitt said. “We went back to watch it through our doorbell camera! Mind blowing!â€
It was likely a meteor, according to Patrick Moore, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
Meteors are small rocks or objects from space coming through Earth’s atmosphere that start to heat up from the friction, said Moore.

Moore saw Pruitt’s video and said he expected this meteor was a little bigger and burned lower to the ground. He said he wouldn’t be surprised if there was some noise with the meteor, like a couple of booms.
“These things happen from time to time,†he said. “They’re seemingly random. The likely explanation is that this is just a leftover bit from the Perseid meteor shower, although even in the Perseid meteor shower most of them are very tiny and burn up very high in the atmosphere.â€
He said he’s only seen one meteor in his life, when he was in college.
“I was walking home from the library and all of a sudden this big ball of fire went streaking across the sky, just like you see in this doorbell camera,†Moore said.
He said most meteors burn out before they can hit the ground.
