Burke County deputies say they seized marijuana, psilocybin mushrooms and amphetamines from a man during two separate interactions.
Mario Alfonso Rocha, 28, of Morganton, first was served with warrants for felony possession of cocaine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia during a traffic stop on Oct. 25, according to information from the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.
A deputy pulled over a vehicle driven by Rocha around 3:22 p.m. after seeing traffic offenses, including driving while using a cellphone. A deputy ran the license plate on the car, but it did not match any records, the sheriff’s office said.
When deputies approached the car, they noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from it. Rocha, the driver, said his license was suspended, and deputies learned he had an outstanding order for arrest for possession of cocaine, the sheriff’s office said.

Investigators had Rocha step out of the vehicle, then saw a large amount of cash in the side door panel and marijuana and THC vape cartridges sticking out from under the driver’s seat, according to the sheriff’s office.
A search of the car turned up a pistol, more controlled substances, drug paraphernalia and cash. Deputies seized all the items, including Rocha’s car, the sheriff’s office said.
Rocha was served with the outstanding warrant that day, the sheriff’s office said. His bond was set at $5,000 secured.
On Oct. 28, charges were issued against Rocha for possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver a schedule II controlled substance and carrying a concealed handgun.
Deputies obtained a search warrant for Rocha’s house on Oct. 30, and the search turned up about 50 pounds of marijuana/THC, about 1.3 pounds of psilocybin mushrooms and about 20 grams of amphetamines, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies also seized a large amount of cash.
Rocha was served with the warrants for possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver a schedule II controlled substance and carrying a concealed weapon, the sheriff’s office said. A judge set his bond at $15,000 secured during a court appearance on Thursday, Oct. 31.
More charges are expected against Rocha, said Burke County Sheriff Banks Hinceman.
