The North Carolina Department of Transportation says it is reviewing options for a crosswalk on West Fleming Drive in Â鶹´«Ã½ after two students from the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics were hurt in a crash there in Jan. 29.
The Â鶹´«Ã½ City Council signaled the possibility of a speed limit change for a high-traffic road in the city.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation has reviewed West Fleming Drive from Burkemont Avenue to South Sterling Street and is working on reducing the speed limit from 45 mph to 35 mph, according to information from the city of Â鶹´«Ã½.
The change comes after two North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics—Â鶹´«Ã½ students were hit by a car when they crossed the street there on Jan. 29. The Â鶹´«Ã½ Department of Public Safety said the car ran a red light. One of the students was seriously injured in the crash. Almost a year earlier, two other students were hit by a car in the same intersection.
To move the speed limit change forward, the Â鶹´«Ã½ City Council approved an amendment to its code of ordinances, changing the speed limit for the road to match the citywide 35 mph speed limit.

Randy Tritt, a traffic engineer for NCDOT, said the department will install new speed limit signs once all the official documentation is complete.
Tritt said reducing the speed limit is part of an initial review of the intersection on West Fleming Drive at the entrance to the NC School for the Deaf and NC School of Science and Mathematics.
Tritt said other infrastructure options are being considered as part of an ongoing study about the intersection.
