The Freedom boys soccer team earned its second win in thee games with a victory over nonconference county rival Draughn, 4-2, at home in Â鶹´«Ã½ on Wednesday.
Freedom previously had beaten McDowell 5-1 on the road in Marion on Aug. 28 to snap a four-match losing skid. The Patriots (3-5) topped the Wildcats (1-2) by outscoring them 2-1 in the first half, then holding an identical 2-1 advantage after the intermission.
Freedom had two goals from Gary Vicente and one apiece from Noah Semple and David Perez.
Mylton Lopez Garcia scored both goals unassisted for Draughn.
Patton 5, Foard 1
The Panthers (7-2) earned a nonconference win at home in Â鶹´«Ã½ on Tuesday, leading 1-0 at halftime before outscoring the visiting Tigers 4-1 after the intermission.

Romny Lopez got Patton on the board in the 31st minute. Out of halftime, David Bernabe scored the second goal in the 43rd minute off a Gabino Vasquez assist. Josue Yax scored on a 23-yard free kick in the 51st minute. PHS’ fourth goal came from Aldair Pinto off an assist from Tony Vicente in the 52nd minute. And the hosts’ final goal of the contest came from Gio Banales off a Trevin Lavoie assist in the 71st minute.
The Patton defense was led by Vasquez, Jacob Batz, Gabe Batz, Colsyn Queen, Allen Morales, Jacob Ruiz and goalkeeper Isai Jimenez (five saves).
East Burke 1, Cherryville 1
The Cavaliers (1-4-1) battled to a nonconference tie at home in Icard on Tuesday as both teams scored their lone goal in the first half.
Anthony Romero scored for EBHS off an assist from Tucker Chapman. Jaydon Fair worked in goal for the Cavs.
Hickory 3, Freedom 0
The Patriots were blanked in a nonconference match at home in Â鶹´«Ã½ on Tuesday.
Dalton Rice, Axel Hernandez and Braeden McCourt scored a goal apiece for the Red Tornadoes.
VOLLEYBALL
Freedom 3, Bunker Hill 1
The Lady Patriots (3-7) earned their second win in three matches with a nonconference triumph at home in Â鶹´«Ã½ on Wednesday, 26-24, 25-20, 23-25, 25-21.
Offensively, FHS was led by Kaitlyn Hagmann (14 kills, six aces), Ava Whitaker (11 kills, ace), Mia Furches (seven kills, two aces), Kennedy Denton (two kills, 16 assists), Katie Seattle (two kills) and Madelyn LeMasters (two kills).
On the defensive side, Freedom’s top performers were Hagmann, Furchess and LeMasters with two blocks apiece.
Patton 3, East Rutherford 2
The Lady Panthers (9-2, 1-1 Mountain Foothills 7 1A/2A Conf.) earned their first conference win with a five-set victory on the road in Bostic on Tuesday, 20-25, 18-25, 25-21, 25-17, 15-10.
On offense, PHS was led by Hannah Huggins (19 kills, four aces, two assists), Reece Edwards (17 kills, two aces), Anna Lynn Ripley (nine kills, ace), Soraya Hartman (six kills, assist), Kate Clark (three kills, two aces), Abigail Carpenter (kill, ace, 31 assists), Carly Setterlind (ace, six assists) and Emma Griffin (ace, 11 assists).
The defensive side for Patton was led by Setterlind (21 digs, 44 receptions), Carpenter (16 digs), Ripley (13 digs, three blocks, 20 receptions), Clark (11 digs, eight receptions), Griffin (11 digs), Edwards (seven digs, four blocks, four receptions), Huggins (six digs, nine blocks, three receptions), Jolann Buff (five digs, eight receptions), Hartman (three digs) and Kynzlee Worley (dig).
Draughn 3, Avery County 0
The Lady Wildcats (7-3, 2-0 Western Highlands 1A/2A Conf.) won Tuesday’s conference match in straight sets on the road in Newland, 25-8, 25-23, 25-15.

The Lady Dragons (1-5, 0-1 WHC) were blanked during their inaugural conference match, falling on the road in Marshall on Tuesday, 25-6, 25-11, 25-20.

Draughn, East Burke at Bandys
East Burke competed in Wednesday’s first CVAC meet, which also included county rival Draughn from outside the conference, hosted by Bandys in Catawba.
The Lady Cavaliers’ Cadence Willis won the girls race with a time of 21:17.87. She was followed by teammates Aubrey Sanders (14th), Gracie Kaylor (16th), Maliena Smith (42nd), Mackenzie Laastad (52nd), Jocelyn Martinez Lopez (54th), Genevieve Wilson (56th), Regan Parsons (57th) and Eve Sweet (59th).
The Lady Wildcats were led by Adelei Morrow (fifth), Lilah Johnson (seventh), Saylor Watson (ninth), Macy Auton (28th), Anna Bordeleau (29th) and Sophie Adams (30th).
On the boys side, East Burke was led by podium finishers Elijah Baker (second; 13:21.75) and Ethan Bishop (third; 18:23.87), along with Marc Denton (11th), Kade Tolbert (17th), Benjamin Bolynn (19th), Randy Bradshaw (23rd), Job Snow (29th) and Eduardo Valencia Soria (58th).
The DHS boys were paced by Tray Powell (ninth), Braxton Kirkland (32nd), Colton Bollinger (46th) and Benjamin Fortune (48th).
Freedom at South Caldwell
The Patriots participated in the Northwestern 3A/4A pre-conference meet, hosted by South Caldwell at Lenoir Aquatic and Fitness Center on Wednesday.
The FHS boys were led by Christopher Uren (17th), Jonah Griggs (20th), Nick Chiota (28th), Frank Harrelson (33rd), Eric Francisco (44th), Ian Austin (45th), Rex Jones (48th), David Cook (53rd) and Parker Brown (55th).
On the girls side, Freedom’s leaders were Chloe Spencer (43rd), Santa Chan Mejia (51st) and Abigail Beam (59th).
GIRLS TENNIS
NCSSM-Â鶹´«Ã½ 9, Owen 0
The Lady Dragons (4-0, 3-0 WHC) maintained their unblemished start to the season with a shutout conference win on the road in Black Mountain on Wednesday.
In singles, NCSSM-Â鶹´«Ã½â€™s winners were No. 1 Will Levine 6-0, 6-2; No. 2 Kirsten Boyd 6-2, 6-2; No. 3 Gina Byon 6-3, 6-1; No. 4 Savannah McDonnell 6-4, 6-3; No. 5 Shriya Reddy 6-0, 6-0; and No. 6 Emma Johnson 6-0, 6-0.
Doubles winners for the Lady Dragons included Levine/McDonnell 8-0, No. 2 Boyd/Byon 8-4, and No. 3 Reddy/Johnson 8-1.
Draughn 8, Mountain Heritage 1
The Lady Wildcats (4-2, 3-1 WHC) cruised to a conference victory on the road in Burnsville on Wednesday.
Singles victories for DHS came with No. 1 Aubrey Childers 6-0, 6-0; No. 2 Maria Medrano 6-4, 6-3; No. 3 Sasha Duckworth 6-0, 6-0; No. 4 Peyton Dale 6-0, 6-1; No. 5 Addelynn Honeycutt 6-0, 6-1; and No. 6 Mati Kincaid 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, Draughn won with No. 1 Madelyn Hudson/Makenzie Powell 8-1 and No. 3 Emma Starrett/Mackinzie Basinger 8-4.
South Caldwell 8, Freedom 1
The Lady Patriots (0-2, 0-2 NWC) stayed winless with a league loss on Wednesday at home in Â鶹´«Ã½.
FHS’ lone win came at No. 3 doubles with Delaney Dellinger/Nancy Acosta 8-5.
East Rutherford 5, Patton 4
The Lady Panthers (0-3, 0-1 MF7) remained winless and narrowly dropped their conference-opener on the road in Bostic on Tuesday.

The Lady Patriots opened their season with a conference loss on the road in Lenoir on Monday.
In singles, FHS won with No. 1 Emily Kania 6-1, 6-4 and No. 4 Leah Kirksey 7-5, 6-3.
The visitors’ lone doubles win came at No. 1 with Kania/Kirksey 8-6.
JV FOOTBALL
Patton 46, Owen 0
The JV Panthers (2-0) traveled to Black Mountain and recorded a nonconference shutout on Wednesday over the host JV Warhorses.
Jet Chatman again led the way for PHS, rushing for 209 yards and four touchdowns on 14 carries. Lane Charlet had 77 yards and a touchdown on four carries, along with two successful two-point conversion runs. River McCrary contributed as a rusher (2-31; two two-point conversions) and a receiver (2-6) and Urijah Rhoda ran for 22 yards on two attempts. Quarterback Greyson Sochacki completed 6 of 10 passes for 134 yards and a touchdown to Alex Ryan (4-60), who also caught a two-point conversion pass.
McCrary and Austin Goins led the defense with an interception apiece.
