A South Caldwell High School soccer player died over the weekend following a seizure.
South Caldwell High School made a post on the school’s Facebook page on Saturday asking for prayers for freshman Makala Rangel. The girls soccer team held a prayer vigil for Rangel on Sunday.
Rangel was 15 years old.
“Makala on Friday evening was taken by EMS due to a seizure, in which doctors found a brain bleed,†the post said. “She was then airlifted to (Atrium Health Wake Forest) Baptist Hospital and is now in need of all the prayers she and her family can get from our community.â€
The South Caldwell High School athletics department made a Facebook post on Sunday night saying Rangel did not survive.
“We are extremely heartbroken and devasted with the passing of freshman student-athlete Makala Rangel over the weekend,†the post said. “Makala was tremendously loved by her classmates, teammates, coaches, teachers, and community. The Rangel family is in our thoughts and prayers during this time.â€
A was started to collect money for Rangel’s funeral expenses. The account says it was created by Rangel’s sister-in-law, Diana Luna.
Rangel had an indoor soccer game at the Hudson Recreation Center on Friday night, according to the GoFundMe site. Rangel suffered a seizure and was taken to a hospital. She died Sunday evening, the GoFundMe site said.
The post by South Caldwell’s athletic department said members of the Caldwell County Schools Crisis Response Team will be at South Caldwell High School for several days to offer grief support.
