A Â鶹´«Ã½ man was arrested Thursday evening. Police said he hit a woman in the head with the butt of a gun and threatened to kill her.
Josh Ray Ross, 45, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, assault on a female and a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence following the incident on Gibbs Street in Glen Alpine, according to court records.
Glen Alpine Police Chief Kirk Penley said officers were directing school traffic Thursday afternoon when they were called about the domestic incident. He said officers were familiar with the address and had responded previously to disturbances at the address.
When police arrived, a woman said Ross wanted her to go to dinner with him. When she refused, he pushed her to the ground, got an AR-style rifle out of his car and hit her in the arm and back with the butt of the gun, Penley said.
Penley said Ross fired a shot from the rifle but it’s not clear if he pointed it at the sky or into the distance. Penley said officers recovered a shell casing from the scene.
A neighbor who witnessed the incident yelled at Ross to leave the woman alone, Penley said. He said Ross threatened to kill her if she called the police.
Penley said Â鶹´«Ã½ officers saw Ross at his house on Salem Road before 6 p.m. Thursday. Glen Alpine officers stood by in the area waiting on charges to be issued.
When Ross tried to leave, Glen Alpine and a Â鶹´«Ã½ officer stopped his car, Penley said. He said there were two rifles in the vehicle with Ross.
Ross was in Burke County District Court on Friday where Assistant District Attorney Austin Foster asked Judge Richard Holloway to set Ross’ bond at $20,000 secured and allow police to seize his guns if he makes bond.
Holloway set Ross' bond at $30,000 secured. He isn’t allowed to have any firearms or other deadly weapons while the case is pending, court officials said.
Ross is due back in court in April.
