A Drexel man was arrested Monday and charged with making threats against a Burke County school.

Brandon Dean Johnson, 40, was charged with communicating a threat of mass violence on educational property, according to information from Drexel Police Chief Stephen Ritchie.
A copy of the warrant for arrest said Johnson told someone he would be “engaging in a mass shooting†at a Burke County school or schools.
Johnson’s arrest came after a lengthy investigation that culminated in a search warrant Monday at his home, 609 S. Main St., Drexel, according to information from Ritchie.

Officers found guns, magazines, ammunition, a ballistic vest and other items that would aid the investigation, information from Ritchie said.
Burke County Public Schools said in a statement Tuesday it was aware of an ongoing law enforcement investigation.
“At this time, there is information suggesting that the investigation involves potential threats, possibly related to school campuses,†the statement from the school district said.
The district said patrols around schools were increased Tuesday and district staff are following all established safety protocols, plans and procedures.
“At this time, based on the information provided to us by law enforcement, we do not believe there is an imminent threat to any of our schools,†the district’s statement said. “However, we remain vigilant and will continue working closely with law enforcement to ensure the safety of our students and staff.â€
Johnson’s bond was set at $200,000 secured in Burke County District Court, information from Ritchie said.
